Electrolysis

Electrolysis is a method of hair removal that permanently removes the hair by using a fine probe that is inserted into the hair follicle providing heat to destroy the hair. Once the hair is detached from the follicle, it is then removed with tweezers.

Most areas of the body can be treated, however, smaller areas are more effective. The most common areas are facial, underarms, bikini, stomach and nipple hair, however, larger areas can be treated and are as effective, but require more time.

Electrolysis can be used on all hair types, whether they are curly, dark, blond, thick or thin hair.

There are a number of different reasons we get unwanted hair, with the main cause being a hormone imbalance which usually causes growth of hair around the facial area. Another cause is an excess of testosterone, which everyone has in their bodies, but a surplus in women will often cause unwanted hair and it is also possible for some prescription drugs and illnesses to stimulate hair growth.

If you have not had an electrolysis treatment with Passion Beauty before, we will start by doing a consultation including a review of your medical history. If you have a medical condition that makes electrolysis inadvisable (contraindications) we will advise you and will not be able to proceed with the treatment.

Individual treatments of 5, 10, 15, 20, 30, 45 and 60 minute sessions can be purchased. We also offer courses of treatments at a reduced rate of: buy five treatments and get the sixth free or buy eight treatments and get two treatments free.

The success rate of Electrolysis varies from person to person, therefore some clients require more treatments than others to completely remove hair from an area. There are three stages of the hair growth circle, which takes around four weeks. If electrolysis is performed during the correct cycle, then the hair will be destroyed straight away, however, by looking at the hair it is not possible to tell which stage the hairs are at. We recommend that clients come in once a week for smaller areas or twice a month if it is a larger area.

Electrolysis isn’t painful and in most cases doesn’t actually cause any discomfort.

After the treatment the treated area could be slightly red and can feel warm, however, this will only last for a couple of hours and then should calm down. If you have very sensitive skin, a patch test is recommended so that you are able to experience the feel of the treatment before paying for a full session.

The hair needs to be long enough that the electrologist (therapist) can see which way the hair is growing out of the hair follicle (approximately 2-3 mm). Prior to treatment don’t use any other method of hair removal e.g bleaching creams or dissolvable hair creams as they may cause skin reactions with the treatment.

All methods are as effective as each other. We will advise you which is the best method for you depending on the types of hair we are treating.

Short wave diathermy
This method utilises heat. When the probe is inserted into the follicle you will feel the heat in the follicle and that’s what destroys it. This method is the quickest method and the electrologist can remove more hairs in one session with this method.

Galvanic
This method utilises a chemical reaction between the probe and a metallic bar. When the probe is inserted into the follicle, the hair is destroyed by a chemical reaction caused by the the probe (the anode) and a metal bar (the cathode) which you hold in your hand. You will feel a very slow intensity of heat and its gradually builds up in intensity. This procedure takes around 5 seconds to perform, making it a slower way of removing the hair but it isn’t as intense compared to short wave diathermy method.

Blend
Blend is the short wave diathermy and the galvanic working together. This is a more affective way of removing thicker hairs. This also takes around 5 seconds to perform and builds up in intensity, meaning is is also a great alternative if you don’t like the short wave method.

After your electrolysis treatment we recommend the following:

  • Avoid sun-beds, heat treatments, steam rooms or saunas for 48 hours
  • Avoid touching the treated area for 48 hours, so you do not transfer bacteria from your hands
  • Do not apply perfumed products for 48 hours
  • Apply Sterex Aloe Vera lotion to soothe the area
  • Avoid putting any thick creams on the area for 12 hours, as it will keep the heat in
  • Let the skin cool and breathe for 12 hours
  • Do not use a swimming pool or spa for 48 hours
