We are opening!!! Yippee!!!

Based on the latest government advice, our Norton Lees salons will be reopening on the 14th July and our Central Sheffield Salon (inside Nuffield Gym) will be opening on the 25th July. The whole team are so excited to be getting back to work and seeing all of our lovely clients again. We hope you are all well and as excited as we are to be getting back to some kind of normality. As a result, we are now taking online bookings for both hair and beauty.

To Book Online now:
Why not book online? Please click on the name of the salon to open the booking screen:
– Norton Lees
– Central Sheffield (Nuffield Gym)

As part of reopening we have implemented a number of changes (based on the advice of the government) for both your safety and ours.

Transmission through contact

Time spent with clients will be minimised outside of the treatment provided.

Our staff will wash their hands every hour or after every client if that is sooner.

All of our staff will wear face masks at all times.

We ask that all clients bring masks but, if you do not have any or forget, masks will be available for clients, however, there will be a small charge of 50p per mask to cover our costs.

Hard surfaces will be wiped down every hour and after each client.

Treatments

Your belongings will be put in a plastic box and then the box will be cleaned between each client.

Windows and doors will be kept open where practical to maximise ventilation.

At our Norton salon you will be assigned a different entrance depending on which room your treatment is in.

Blow drys will not be included with the treatment and as a result all cuts will be wet cuts only. Unfortunately due to the time required for all of the additional measures the hair cuts will still be charged at the same price.

Paying and Booking Appointments

All bookings will need to be made either online or over the phone. We will, however, be accepting walk in treatments if we have capacity.

The durations of some treatment times will be extended from pre-lockdown times. You may notice this when you book online. This is to allow adequate time for taking payment and cleaning so that there is no cross over between clients.

All treatments must start promptly at the appointment time. If you are late for your treatment we may need to reduce the treatment time to ensure there is enough time to collect your belongings, take payment and clean the room and equipment before the next client. If you are late for your appointment, we do reserve the right to charge the full treatment cost, even if your treatment needs to be cut short.

We will only be accepting card payment and no cash.

For all treatments £45 or less we would request that you use contactless payment.

Reception / Waiting areas

At both salons the waiting areas will not be used to ensure clients are able to maintain social distancing. As a result we would ask that clients arrive at the time of their appointment and not early.

At this time we ask that you are not accompanied by any children in the salon.

Staff

We will explain to you before your treatment what changes we may have made compared to your normal experience.

Please do not be offended, but before each treatment we will ask every client if you are feeling unwell, have a temperature or a cough. If this is the case, we will not be able to perform the treatments.

Clients

Please maintain social distancing where possible.

Hand sanitiser will be provided for clients and staff.

The usual magazines will not be available for now.

Unfortunately we will not be providing drinks or biscuits, however, you are welcome to bring your own.

Please bring your own face mask. If you do not bring one, one can be purchased from us for 50p.

We appreciate that some clients who are vulnerable may still wish to stay at home or keep away from the salon at this time.

What is the treatment?

The treatments usually last around an hour and costs around £30. The process involves covering the face with a black face mask. Once set it’s pealed off exfoliating the face, clearing blackheads and pores, removing unwanted hair in the process. The masks contain charcoal, which makes the mask black, and is intended to purify the skin.

Some sites claim that the treatment is pain free, however, we’ll let you make the call if it’s pain free or not!

So whats the issue?

Now the treatments promise a lot, but in our opinion also have the potential to cause damage to the skin.

What do the experts say?

Andy Millward, facialist and member of the BABTAC has warned just how much damage they could be doing.

‘They effectively act like glue binding to the cells on the skin’s surface as well as any vellus hair. In fact, there are loads of DIY versions of the mask doing the rounds on YouTube which literally are made from PVA Glue and charcoal powder. When removed, the mask is removing cells from the outer layer of skin (the stratum corneum) and any hair along with it. You only need to watch some of the videos that have gone viral to see the excruciating pain the mask users are in.’

What damage can the treatment do?

Andy explained that although your skin may be soft and smooth, this is simply because you’ve effectively stripped off a surface layer of skin. It’s a form of extremely aggressive exfoliation that irritates the skin in the process. The other thing the masks are pulling off your face, other than your baby hairs? All the natural oils that sit on your skin to keep it healthy.

These oils provide a chemical barrier that protects the skin from any harmful micro-organisms. So when you strip them away, you’re leaving your skin open to all kinds of nasty stuff.

‘It’s a little like using a chainsaw to prune a tree, when some hand-held garden shears would have done the job. The chainsaw might get the job done, but you’ll end up stripping the tree back a little further than intended.’

What if I’ve already had the treatment?

So, you’ve had the treatment, now what do you do? Well don’t panic, within 30 days, the skin will replace the oils and sebaceous filaments you’ve ripped. So stay calm as the damage will heal. But that won’t happen if you keep using the masks!

‘If you’ve used the masks once you’re unlikely to cause any long-term damage so don’t panic. The positive thing is the skin is a very sophisticated organ. It is more than capable of replacing the sebaceous filaments that have been removed.’

However this process can take up to 30 days, during which time the skin is obviously going to be a little more vulnerable.

‘So if you continue to use products that strip the skin of its natural oils (including harsh cleansers and exfoliants) then you’re likely to cause secondary issues.’

He recommends using a gentle cleanser while you wait for the skin to recover. Also apply a hydrating, antioxidant-rich serum to help the repair process along. Make sure to use a sunscreen, too, as the damage may make your skin more sensitive and vulnerable to damage.

Risks

The NHS website (https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/hair-dye-reactions/) states that many hair dyes (and beauty products) contain ingredients that can irritate your skin or cause an allergic reaction. It’s important to be aware of this risk, and know what to do. Reactions to hair dye (and beauty products) are avoidable if you follow some simple safety advice.

Some people are prone to a skin reaction called contact dermatitis. This means their skin becomes red, dry and irritated (inflamed) when they come into contact with a particular substance. The substance may either be an irritant, or an allergen, triggering an allergic reaction that affects the skin. Many permanent and some semi-permanent hair dyes contain a chemical called paraphenylenediamine (PPD) – a known irritant and allergen. This is the culprit of most reactions to hair dye.

Process

Patch and skin allergy tests (also known as Colour Safety Tests in the hair industry) usually involve putting a small amount of the products behind your ear or on the inside of your elbow/forearm.

Mosts test skin allergy tests require 24 hours for beauty treatments and 48 hours for heir treatments.

Tests have to be repeated on a regular basis (normally six months) or if there are significant changes, such as being pregnant or the start of certain medication. All tests will be recorded on your client record card so that we are able to see when your next test is due.
